Primarily, Idaho’s Heart acts as a facilitator to coordinate statewide child abuse prevention efforts and activities. A major focus of our work includes educating professionals, paraprofessionals, parents and others about child abuse and neglect indicators, mandated reporting laws and procedures, and prevention strategies.

We do this through workshops, seminars, conferences, public speaking, material distribution, and print media.

Child Abuse in Idaho

This workshop reviews statistics on child abuse and neglect in Idaho over the past five years followed by an overview of the existing programs that work to prevent abuse and neglect from occurring.  Handouts

 

Legislative Advocacy on Behalf of Children and Families

Participants review legislation presented during the current or past legislative session and understand the impact of the legislation.  Participants also learn about Idaho's legislative process and explore ways they can influence the legislative process in general and the outcomes for families in particular.  Participants will also learn appropriate legislative activities for 501(c)3 organizations.  Handouts: Idaho Legislature: How a Bill Becomes a Law  and  United Vision for Idaho's Easy Reference Guide for 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 organizations

 

The Myth of the Big Bad Wolf

This workshop explores definitions, incidence, prevalence, and contributing factors in child sexual abuse followed by a discussion of promising approaches to preventing child sexual abuse.  Handouts

 

Shaken Baby Syndrome and the Period of PURPLE Crying

This workshop begins with an overview Shaken Baby Syndrome.  Attendees will then learn about the PURPLE acronym developed to help parents remember that infant crying, the most common cause of Shaken Baby Syndrome, is as normal as the frustration it causes.

 

Substance Abuse and the Effect on Children

This workshop provides a basic overview on various substances with a focus on methamphetamine, then examines their impact on the mind and body, and what children who live with parents under the influence experience.
